Thank you all for the time you took to fill-out the LYC Jr Sailing survey as well as your interest in LYC Jr Sailing! We have taken your collective feedback and sought to accommodate as many viewpoints as possible in designing the summer and fall programs.
The first change is that we will tweak the programming and run a skill building session in place of the Introduction to Racing. The skill building will focus on core building blocks of sailing skills that lead to better boat handling, trim and speed. Participants must have completed Summer Sailing Camp and/or have other experience. This is not a beginning sailing class. Participants will improve their skills and be ready for racing if they like, or just having fun sailing faster and more safely.
The second tweak is that we will run a one week session for summer as nearly everyone preferred that option over the option of an extended multi-week session.
Here is an outline:
The summer program will run the week of July 20th - that is coming up fast!
Sailing Skills - Building key sailing skills - 9:30AM - 12:00PM - Mala Ramp
Advanced Sailing Skill/Racing Team - 12:00PM - 3:00PM - Mala Ramp
The price for each session (morning or afternoon) is $325 for Lahaina Yacht Club members and $375 for non-members. Non-Memebers get a Junior Membership included.
If all goes as planned, the fall program will run on six Sundays beginning August 9th and leading up to the Dinsmoor Regatta on the weekend of October 10-11 (the six count does not include regatta days but is designed to accommodate weather days).
Seamanship - Building key sailing skills - 9:30AM - 12:00PM - Mala Ramp
Racing Team - 12:00PM - 3:00PM - Mala Ramp
The price is $325 for members and $375 for non-members.
Both sessions will rely on volunteers and parental support. Some of you already shared capacity to help, if you have capacity and have not shared that, please do. Help can be any number of ways, not just launching and landing on the beach!
We will follow USAA Sailing Guidelines for the summer of covid and each session is limited to 6 spots (so we will have up to 12 sailors each day).
The sessions will be held outdoors (with temperature checks each day) and we may add some Zoom calls for chalk talks with coach Ian as needed.
We ran a test day last weekend and all systems are go at the Mala ramp. We are super excited for these programs and look forward to getting everyone back out onto the water again!
